Instructional Design and Learning Theories
The goal of this course is to apply constructivist learning theories and instructional design principles in the development and delivery of an online course utilizing significant learning environments through selected course management tools.
Whew! You might be thinking, what does all of that mean? For a better understanding of the goal, let's break down a few of the key terms.
Constructivist Learning Theory: Constructivism is a learning theory found in psychology which explains how people might acquire knowledge and learn. It therefore has direct application to education. The theory suggests that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their experiences.
Instructional Design: Instructional design, or instructional systems design (ISD), is the practice of creating instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing.
Significant Learning Environment: Teaching that produces a learning experience resulting in something that is truly significant in terms of the students’ lives.
Course Management Tools: A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology (also called e-learning) courses or training programs.
Week 1 of EDLD 5318 provided the opportunity to explore several different learning theories before deciding which one best fit our teaching style. Out of Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism and Connectivism, I identify more with Constructivism than any other.
So, with a great theory in hand, I embarked on another leg of my digital learning and leading journey. On this trip, I will develop an online course using the learning management system Schoology. My course is designed to assist teachers in creating significant learning environments through the use of Microsoft OneNote.
The document below highlights several key components necessary for the creation of a successful course. Week 1 of EDLD 5318 definitely was a lot to digest. For me, the hardest part is just getting those first few ideas down on paper. Then, once I have a plan, it is easy to trust that the process will produce a quality product. I am looking forward to what week 2 has in store.
